High Definition at the Rock Awards 2009

For the first time I had the chance to watch Rock Awards held last Oct. 30. Thanks to Mykol, a fellow runner, who gave me a free ticket so I can watch live band performances. I even had to forego attending the carbo loading party hosted by Takbo.ph runners just to see this show.

I never expected that the ticket given to me was indeed a VIP pass. A fact which I only discovered after I entered the wrong gate. Good thing there was a guy, a member of the organizing team, who enthusiastically guided me to the VIP gate. If only there was a special award for early bird that night, may be, I could have won it. Beers and chips were overflowing at the VIP side. Since neither water nor ice tea was available, and not a beer drinker myself, I had to buy a glass of cola instead.

Even though Metro Manila had been placed under Storm Signal No. 3, a number of young rock enthusiasts trooped to the World Trade Center for the NU107 Rock Awards, ready to bolt anytime, just to get a good spot near the stage. I love music regardless of its genre. However, since doing a lot of things lately, some of the artists who performed that night, except Kamikazee, were no longer familiar to me . The night was filled with energetic performances by well-known bands such as the Kamikazee, Greyhound, Rico Blanco, the famous Ely Buendia of Eraserheads, among others. The awards night was highlighted by the induction of the late Master Rapper Francis M. into the NU Rock Awards’ Hall of Fame.

Up Dharma Down bagged three major awards–Artist of the Year, Album of the Year for their second album Bipolar, and Vocalist of the Year for Armi Millare, who tied with Sugarfree’s vocalist for the category. A total of 14 bands performed that night. For some reason The Dawn didn’t make it. The event was hosted by actress Iza Calzado and the funny Ramon Bautista. Some takbo.ph runners joined us at WTC to also watch the show.
