Battle of the Sexes, 26 January 2013

Last December 20, Thursday, Sofitel Philippine Plaza announced the newest run series in town dubbed as Sofitel Battle of the Sexes: Defend Your Gender, a 10-kilometer night run where male and female runners will compete with each other in one finish line, one venue, one distance. Runrio, Inc. will organize the race with Sofitel Philippine Plaza as the title sponsor.

“We have partnered with track and field coach, Rio de la Cruz, who is an icon of the youth for espousing fitness in order to promote the importance of health and fitness to the Filipinos.  In addition, all the proceeds of the RunRio [race] will go to Virlanie Foundation to help alleviate the plight of the street children in Manila,” says Goran Aleks, Sofitel Philippine Plaza General Manager.

In this race female runners will get a 7 to 10-minute head start over the male runners, and the best ones will receive exciting prizes from Sofitel including a three-night stay at the exclusive Imperial Residence, dining at Spiral, and beauty treatments from Le Spa and Vietura.  The first leg will commence on January 26 at the SM Mall of Asia grounds.

Battle of the Sexes is presented to you by Chevrolet Philippines in cooperation with Century Pacific, Canon Fashion Tailoring, Gatorade and Timex.

The Runrio Trilogy Awards Night, March 1

From its inception, I knew then that I wanted to complete the trilogy. And so I did.

The Runrio Awards Night was Coach Rio’s way of giving back to runners who have conquered the three main events dubbed as 21K-21K-32K.  It was a night fit for stars.   From the red carpet, photo wall, to stage props, it looked like the Academy Awards.

I attended this event not only as a blogger but also as an awardee for completing the Century Tuna Superbods Run (21K), Nature Valley Run (21K), and Run United 2 (32K) dubbed as The Runrio Trilogy

Never a dull moment especially with the powerful performances of the Philippine All-Stars, a hip-hop dance group that won the World Hip Hop Dance Championships in 2006 and 2008.  That was really a great bonus for me. Yeah, I’m a fan of this group!

Another plus that night was the presence of the Filipina beauty queen, Venus Raj, who was crowned Miss Philippines-Universe last year and represented the country in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, and placed fourth runner-up.

Some runners also garnered special awards.  Runrio’s theme song, Run for Love, and Runrio races for 2011 were also launched that night. Overall, it was a successful event. Kudos to Coach Rio and his Runrio Team for a job well done!  Many, many thanks to Doc Marvs for the photos.

RUNew, 22 Feb. 2009

I really didn’t prepare much for this run. For two reasons. My body was tired. I only had one short run during the week and the rest of the days were spent resting either thru reading or having a DVD movie marathon. I also slept late the night before the race. The main culprit? An old movie of John Travolta … 70’s Saturday Night Fever. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk!

I arrived late at McKinley Hills. Didn’t have much time to do warm-up exercises and stretching. I initially did a one short run around the area with Run Unlimited and Chris. That was it.

Anyway, days before this race, I was already warned by some fellow Happy Feet runners that they wanted to get even with me (in a good way). You see, (whispering) for finishing well at Power Run the previous Sunday, they were challenged. And they were successful, dear readers. Yeah, they were in good condition. And even finished with a very good time. Clap! Clap! Clap!

Me, on the other hand, didn’t do well. It was indeed a very challenging course. With all the uphills and downhills, it wasn’t that easy. I wasn’t able to beat my time. I even told Roger, that fast runner who paced with me at the Power Run to go ahead and leave me because I was really running slowly. This was one of those days when in mind and spirit I knew I could do it but my body was telling me otherwise. I just ran a very comfortable pace instead. Which was a good thing.

Along the way, I was able to chat with Craig, a passionate runner who, along with his family, traveled all the way from Baguio City to just join races in Metro Manila. Allow me to tell you a short background of this runner. Dear readers, Baguio is more or less six hours from Manila. That far, eh? What’s amazing about this runner is that he runs while pushing the stroller of his son, a child with special need. Seeing them together is a profound moment between a father and son.

And, while I was almost taking a right turn at Bayani Road, I saw two familiar faces, that of Kulit Runner and Z. KR super thanks for the photo!

Three more kilometers … almost there … FINISH LINE.

I finished a hilly 15k with a time of 1:43.23. Not really a good time but it was more than OK.

One can’t be a winner the whole time!

Listen to your body.

Speed (sometimes) doesn’t matter. During the run and how you finish it matter.

Do hill training.

Don’t be late when there’s a race.

Have enough time to do warm-up exercises and stretching before a race.

You only have but one competitor … YOURSELF.

Make running as fun as possible.

Make friends.

Don’t forget to smile.

Be happy!

On Her Way Back … Three More Kilometers … Finish Line. Woohoo!
