Chase the Rock: Know More About the 2nd Corregidor International Half Marathon

The 1st Corregidor International Half Marathon (CIHM) was conceptualized to be one of the premiere races in the country and it was held on December 19 last year.  Starting this year, the CIHM will be held yearly every second week of December in the historic island of Corregidor.  This year’s edition, dubbed as “Champions Chase” is happening on December 10.

The race route, covering a total of 21.0975 kilometers, will encompass a demanding combination of paved uphills and down slopes and intermittent segments of dirt trails. But what would really set apart CIHM from the usual running experience of avid runners is that it will exceptionally transport the race participants to key historical hot spots on the remarkable isle.

RUNNING DIVA was one of those who did the test run last year

Right at the start of the race, the runners will experience at once an adrenaline rush as they zoom past the full length of the Malinta Tunnel. The exhilaration will continue to unfold as the runners exit the tunnel’s east access en route to the interior of the atoll. The thrilling highlight of the race surges as the runners negotiate the tricky span of a thickly foliaged trail draped in rays of sunlight, culminating in a run along the rocky cliff of the island with a breathtaking view of Manila Bay, to dramatically finish at the south dock breakwater facing the vast West Philippine Sea.  CIHM will be an extraordinary opportunity for passionate runners to set new norm for personal achievement as finishing the race will be akin to recapitulating a fortress that is home to the resilient and valiant.

It will run from the north side of the island at the Lorcha Dock, the historic landmark where McArthur broke the lines of the then advancing Japanese offense, heading to the west access of Malinta Tunnel, passing through its entire length, to head out to the tail side of the island. The first half of the race route will include the ascent to the Summit Hill with a direct view of the beachfront leading to the Japanese Memorial site en route to the half-way point at the YMCA Parade Grounds. The finish point of the race is at the South dock where the first 21 finishers will be hailed by canon blasts in unison with the lauding strong jets of West Philippine Sea breeze and the resounding clasps of waves smashing the dock’s breakwater.

There will be 3 curfew points along the course: at 5-KM point (45mins), 10-KM point (1h35mins), and finally at the 15-KM point (2h30mins). All runners who have not crossed any of these points within the curfew shall be cleared out from the course by the designated race marshals. They will be shuttled by tranvias to the event staging area and will be subsequently given a Certificate of Participation. There will be no finish time cut off for the race, however. All runners who have successfully crossed cut off points and managed to finish the entire 21K distance will be awarded with the CIHM Medallion to be presented upon crossing the finish line and Finisher’s Certificate.

There will be no qualifying time to participate in the race. Nonetheless, all participants will be required to sign a waiver of liability and indemnification form attesting they have adequately prepared  for the race and are healthy and fit to compete at the time of the race day.

Participants must be at least 18 years of age and should not be more than 70 years old on the day of the race. A proof of age will be required upon registration. Exemptions to the age requirement may be given upon submission of a written proof of parental consent for applicants younger than 18 years or a physician’s certification of fitness for athletic participation for applicants beyond 70 years old. The CIHM is an international event open to all nationalities. However, foreign nationals who are not residents of the Philippines, upon finishing in the top 3 places, must present a clearance from DOLE to claim their prizes.

There will be male and female top 10 Finishers, respectively. All top 10 finishers will receive a certificate of achievement. There will be no age category winners. However, a special citation will be given to the oldest finisher of the 21K race. Top 3 winners from each category will receive cash prizes and trophies. On top of the trophy and cash prize, the male and female champions, to be hailed as “King and Queen of The Rock,” respectively, will be ceremonially awarded with the CIHM Champions Cup. Inscribed on the trophy are the names of the set of champions and of succeeding winners in the ensuing editions of CIHM. The Champions Cup will be on display in Corregidor Island under the care of Sun Cruises, Inc.

All participants will receive a CIHM race pack containing the race bib with RFID timing chip, race route map, and Corregidor International Half-Marathon racer singlet. During the race, only the CIHM race pack will be accepted for deposit. All participants should wear the race bib upon check-in and during the race.

Aside from the centerpiece  21K event, there will be a 10km race for running aficionados who are yet to be familiar with the challenging terrain of Corregidor but yearn to discover and experience its distinctive scenic course. This side event will be billed as 10K Challenge. The top male and female runners in this event will be awarded with a certificate of achievement and winner’s plaque. All finishers in this race category will be awarded with a  10K Achiever Medal.  Only 300 slots will be opened for this side event.  The gun start for 10K is at 8:15AM.

After the race, they may opt for another overnight stay to take part in the Champions Party in the evening or may take the first of the two Saturday afternoon trips back to Manila. The second batch will take the exclusive early morning trip on race day to arrive in  time for an 8:00 AM race gun start. Likewise, after the race, they may opt for an overnight stay to join the Champions Party in the evening or may take the exclusive Sunday afternoon trip back to Manila.
